Melvina was the daughter of Woodson B. and Elizabeth Blair Furkin. She married Charles Oliver Perry Smith, a gentleman thirty years her senior, on February 16, 1865 in Metcalfe County, Kentucky. The couple were the parents of Charles, Mary, Rachel, Oliver, Joshua Wheeler and Joseph Smith. Mr. Smith passed away in 1892. He had been a Civil War veteran, serving with Co A of the 13th Ky Vol Cav, Union. Melvina applied for a Widow's Pension, based upon his military service.

In her latter years, she lived in the household of her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Bessie White Smith, and moved with them from Kentucky to Indiana. They, next, moved from Indiana to Boyle County, Kentucky. Mrs. Smith, then, moved into the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Wheeler and Ethel Smith, in Hamilton County, Ohio. Finally, Mrs. Smith rejoined the Joseph Smith household, in the city of Hamilton, Ohio.

ED: 03-23-1932, pg 13, col 7.

Note: DOB is from the DC. YOB, in the 1850 census was 1836 and her brother, James A. Furkin's YOB was 1835. Surname in the 1850 census: Fergasin. First name on DC and obituary: Welvina. Father's name on DC: Woodson Verkin. Maiden name on marriage record was transcribed as Furgoin. Joseph Smith's interment record lists her maiden name as Ferguson.

Note: At the time of Mrs. Smith's passing, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smith had separated and this accounts for the phrase "home of her daughter-in-law", as Mr. Smith was living elsewhere.
