Harriet Elizabeth Sawyer was born 5 Oct. 1848; the daughter of Lewis H. and Mary (Holden) Sawyer.
Her father and several other men were gathering a group to leave Maine and head to Nebraska to Homestead. During the winter of 1867, the Sawyer family lived in Iowa City so the children could be schooled. During their stay there, Samuel M. Holden & Harriet were married. Their first child, Abbie Eldora "Dora" Holden was born on Jan. 23, 1868 in Iowa.
When Dora was 9 months old,the four or more family groups arrived in Cass County Nebraska. They settled on Homesteads of 80 acres each in section 4, Elmwood Precinct, which soon became known as "Maineland" near the town of Murdock.
Besides Dora, Samuel & Harriet had 4 more children; William M., Helen C., Ernest L., and Frank C. Holden.
