Samuel Melville Holden was born in Casco Village on Casco Bay, Maine on March 27, 1840. He was the son of Samuel M. & Abigail (Hayden) Holden. In 1861 at 21 he enlisted with the 1st Maine Calvary as farrier. After the war he went home to Maine where he heard of several families from Casco & Otisfield planning to resettle in Iowa & later, Nebraska.
In 1867 he married Harriet E. Sawyer and they had 5 children Abbie Eldora, William Melville, Helen Currier, Ernest Lee, & Frank Carter.
The Holdens remained on their Homestead in Nebraska until 1890 when they rented it to their son, William, daughter Abbie & her husband. The remainder of the familiy moved to Weeping Water where Samuel passed away in 1907.
