Vergene Kirby Allen was the grandaughter of Stephen and Margaret Marren Kirby of Steward, Lee County (buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Rochelle), and Patrick and Nora Sullivan Riley Haish of Malta, DeKalb County, IL who are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeKalb. She is the Great grandaughter of James Kirby and Mary O'Donnell, who are also buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Rochelle, as well as the great grandaughter of John Riley and Mary Sugrue. All of her grandparents were born in Ireland and came to the United States during the potato famine. She was the daughter of George Henry and Helena Riley Kirby of DeKalb who are buried next to her. She had one sister, Georgia Kay Kirby Maki (1937-1980)who died in Tucson, AZ. Vergene was known as Jean and sometimes called "Red" due to her beautiful red hair. She graduated in 1941 from Rockford West High School. She was very active in dance and drama activities at West and had many friends. She attended Northern Illinois University for three years before enlisting in the WAVES during World War II.
Vergene was married to Roy Tice "Flip" Allen of Mt. Morris, Ogle County, IL on April 11, 1947 in St. Mary's Church Rectory in DeKalb, IL. She had two children: Michael Kirby Allen (Christine Block) and Margaret(Peggy)Jean Allen Arnold (Stephen). She had one grandaughter, Kate Elizabeth Arnold born in 1979 in Geneva, Kane County, IL. She is buried with two stillborn sons: Steven Allen and James Allen. She lived at 504 Sycamore Road, DeKalb, right across the street from St. Mary's Cemetery. She had many many friends and relatives in DeKalb who grieved her trajic death. Her husband Roy died in 2002 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He donated his body to the University of Wisconsin Medical School.
