First Duke of Sachsen-Weimar. Born the second son of Johann Friedrich I and Sibylle von Jülich-Kleve-Berg. After their fathers death the three sons succeeded him in the territories he had retained after the Schmalkaldic War. After the death of the youngest brother 1565 they divided the territory between themselves. Johann Friedrich received Sachsen-Coburg and Eisenach and choose Gotha as his residence city. Johann Wilhelm received Sachsen-Weimar. The plan actually included them exchanging the territories every three years, but that never happened. Johann Friedrichs involvement in political intrigues angered the Emperor Maximilian II. who finally imposed the Imperial ban on him. After his defeat and imprisonment his land went to Johann Wilhelm. When he too fell into disfavour with the Emperor, Johann Friedrichs sons were reinstalled as their fathers heirs and the lands were divided into three parts.
