Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 18, 2006 at a 9:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church for Melvin Joseph Briscoe, age 85, who passed away Thursday, March 9, 2006 at 10:13 p.m. at Evangeline Oaks Guest House in Carencro.

Interment will be in St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery in Grand Coteau.

Mr. Briscoe was a native and lifelong resident of Sunset. He retired from Acadian Ambulance, Lafayette General Medical Center and also farmed in his earlier years. He was a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Grand Coteau. He was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Court #34 in Grand Coteau and the American Legion Post #12 in Sunset. Mr. Briscoe was a veteran of the military, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a truck driver in the 2019th Quartermaster Truck Co. Aviation Unit, having served in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe and received the ATO Medal, EAMETO Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

Survivors include seven sons, Percy Briscoe and his wife, Beatrice, of Carencro, Oliver Briscoe and his wife, Carolyn, of Lafayette, Edward Briscoe and his wife, Gloria, of Cankton, Howard Briscoe and his wife, Vanessa, of Franklin, TN, Joseph Briscoe and his wife, Nell, of Houston, TX, Paul Briscoe of Sunset and Anthony Briscoe and his wife, Shirley, of Branch, LA; six daughters, Melva Rose Angelle and her husband, Leroy, of Lafayette, Ida Key and her husband, John of Sunset, Cynthia Batiste and her husband, Adam, Elizabeth Martin and her husband, Roland and Loretta Gray and her husband, Joseph, all of Carencro and Priscilla Bright and her husband, Edwin of Franklin, TN; thirty-three grandchildren; twenty-eight great grandchildren; three great, great grandchildren; four brothers, Spencer Guidry, Jr. of Cankton, Ashton Guidry and Eddie Guidry both of Sunset and Rodney Guidry and his wife, Doris of Lake Charles, LA; one sister, Amelia Henry of Cankton and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 55 years, the former Dorothy Lewis; his parents, Ollie Briscoe, mother the former Bernadette Thomas and step-father, Spencer Guidry, Sr.; two brothers, Ollie "Bud" Briscoe, Jr. and Samuel Buchanan; a sister, Verine Briscoe; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Weakley Briscoe, formerly of Memphis, TN and a granddaughter, Sharonda Angelle Talmore.

A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Friday and will continue from 7:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

The family would like to thank Acadiana Renal Physicians, Dr. G. Williams, Dr. H Robles, Dr. Paredes, Dr. Malik, Dr. Mark St. Cyr, members and staff of Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, Southpark Hospital, Evangeline Oaks Guest House, FMC Dialysis Center in Sunset, Complete Home Health, Melancon Pharmacy, Acadian Ambulance and special thanks to his granddaughter, Rosalyn Ryan.

Pallbearers will be his six grandsons, Vonee Key, Romey Briscoe, Harold Batiste, Kevin Briscoe, Roy Lee Angelle and Christopher Briscoe. Honorary pallbearers will be his seven sons and Jared Briscoe, Brandon Briscoe, Nicholas Briscoe, Benjamin Briscoe, Justin Briscoe, Joshua Briscoe,Wayland Briscoe and Adam Batiste, Jr.
