Alice was born in 1853 in Boston to Timothy A. Chapman and Laura Bowker Chapman. Alice attended Milwaukee Female College, a predecessor to Milwaukee Downer College. Later in life she served on Milwaukee Downer’s Board of Trustees from 1906 until 1935. Milwaukee Downer College received numerous donations from Alice and her family over the years. She bequeathed a large sum of money for a new library on the Downer Campus with the provision that the library be called Chapman Hall in honor of her family. Chapman Hall still remains on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus today and is now the Office of the Chancellor.

The Hurvis Center on the Lawrence University Campus was renamed Alice G. Chapman Hall to honor her and the connection between the Milwaukee-Downer campus and Lawrence University.

Alice was an active member of the Woman’s Club of Wisconsin. She was instrumental in starting Milwaukee’s First Vacation School in 1899, which was a forerunner of the Milwaukee Recreation Department. She was an accomplished musician and organized concerts at the Woman’s Club for its members. She was president of the Woman’s Club of Wisconsin from 1912-1914.

Alice was also active in numerous civic groups including the Milwaukee Institute of Arts, the Visiting Nurse Association and Children’s Hospital.
