Max M. Butler, 95, of Eldora, Iowa, died Sept. 23, 2011, at Eldora Nursing and Rehab Center.

Max M. Butler was born in Numa, Iowa, on Nov. 11, 1915, to Mart and Eva (Burchett) Butler. At six months of age, he lived with his grandparents due to the death of his mother. At the age of five Max lived with his aunt and uncle, John and Lottie Patterson while attending the Ledford School in Putnam County, Mo. At the age of 12, he moved with the Pattersons to a farm south of New Providence, Iowa. Max attended school in Hardin and Grundy counties while working for area farmers.

In 1935, he moved with his aunt and uncle to Hubbard and worked for Baker's Dairy. The following year Max moved to Mason City to live with his father and stepmother, Effie. He then moved back to Hubbard in 1937 and was employed again at the dairy.

Max met Hildegard Boeke, whom he married on Christmas Day 1938, at the Zion Church in Hubbard. They continued farming until retirement in 1978.

Max enjoyed fishing at the family pond, working with and riding horses and driving them in local parades. He especially loved watching his grandchildren in activities and spending time with family. Max took much pride in his five great-grandsons.

Survivors include a son, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren Connor a half brother, a half sister, two stepsisters, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hildegard, a brother, Oral (Cotton) Butler, sister, Claudia Sheffler, stepsister, Dima Huey, and stepbrother, Harry VanLaningham.
