THIS MEMORIAL AND OBIT COURTESY OF FAG members # 46776086 and # 47164677. THANK YOU BOTH SO VERY MUCH.

W.H. (Skip) Matlock, 65, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at his Troy, Ore., home after a two-year battle with cancer. At his side was his best friend and partner of 46 years, his wife, Deborah (Red).

Skip was born Nov. 30, 1940, in Seattle, to Helen and Irvin Matlock. Since his father was in the Navy, they traveled around the country while Skip was growing up. When Skip was 15 years old, they settled in Belfair, Wash., where Skip developed a love of cars.

He married Nancy McDonald in December 1960 at his parents' home in Belfair. They had two sons.

His love of cars sent him to the racetrack where he enjoyed running at Silverdale Speedway in Silverdale, Wash. In the mid-1960s he moved his family to California where he drove various trucks and worked for PG&E as a mechanic. He was also the local mechanic for various neighbors and friends. In 1968, they divorced with Skip staying in Auburn, Calif.

Skip's passion for racing became his complete focus at this time in his life, where in 1970, he met Red. They married a couple of years later and had a son, Chad. Together they raced at four different tracks with Skip winning many, many races and four track championships.

He started a garage and operated a backhoe and dump truck business from the Troy area. No matter what the problem was, he could usually find the solution for everyone. There were many a fisherman and hunter who Skip got out of a jam when they were in Troy. His versatility and adeptness will be missed by many.

His is survived by his wife, Red, who will miss him greatly; two sons; sister, brother in law; plus numerous aunts and cousins.

He was loved by many, liked by some and will be missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations please be sent to the American Cancer Society.
