Many thanks to fellow Find A Grave contributor Dave Mills for invaluable help with this memorial, including discovering earlier confusion about Jonathan's date of death and place of burial.

=====

Date and place of birth: William Perry Johnson's Hiatt-Hiett genealogy (1951), p. 366, lists Jonathan's birth as "c1804, Grayson Co, Va." Because he died prior to the 1850 Federal Census, we have no year-specific age for him from a census. Virginia as a place of birth has been disputed, so the place of birth is not specified on this memorial.

Date and place of death and burial: Johnson, p. 366, lists Jonathan's death as "d. 25-8mo-1849, in Ohio." This agrees with records of Chesterfield Monthly Meeting, Morgan Co, OH (Hinshaw, vol. IV, p. 1100) showing the death of Jonathan on 1849, 8, 25. Neither Johnson nor Hinshaw say specifically that Jonathan was at or near the meetinghouse when he died nor that he was buried at Chesterhill. However, Jonathan's father and other relatives were buried at Chesterhill, and the records from Chesterfield MM consistently show people dying and being buried at Chesterhill, so the inescapable conclusion is that Jonathan was buried at Chesterhill too. There may, of course, be no grave marker, either because of Quaker tradition or because of the pre-1850 date of death.

First marriage:

Jonathan married Jemima/Jemimah Davis (dau of Moses and Ann Davis, according to Johnson) in 1825 in Belmont Co, OH, and had children Elisha (1826), Lewis (1827), and Wilson (1829). All are listed in Hinshaw. They were received on certificate by Fall Creek MM from Summerset MM in 1832 (Hinshaw, V, 335).

Second marriage:

Jonathan married Mary Davis (born c. 1815; dau of Harmon and Martha Davis) in 1835 in Clinton Co, OH. They had three children: Martha, Deborah, Lydia Ann. (See Johnson, p. 366.) Jonathan and Mary and four children [Elisha, Lewis, and Willson/Wilson from the first marriage and Martha from the second marriage] were received on certificate by Chesterfield Monthly Meeting, Athens Co, OH, from Clear Creek Monthly Meeting (certificate endorsed by Pennsville MM [previously called Deerfield MM, Morgan Co, OH] in 1837 [see Hinshaw, IV, 1101].

Three of the children subsequently returned to Clear Creek MM or Fairfield MM, and Lewis married contrary to discipline.

The following appears in William Perry Johnson's Hiatt-Hiett Genealogy & Family History 1699-1949, p. 558, within the section about Wilson Hiatt (1829-1871):

". . . Jonathan Hiatt, born in Pennsylvania [note previously mentioned reference to Jonathan's having been born in Grayson Co, VA]; located in Highland Co., Ohio; farmer. Later moved to vicinity of Chesterfield; owned 100 acres; died there. A member of the Abolition Party."

=====

Jonathan's parents: Johnson identifies Jonathan's parents (pp. 240-241) as Jehu Hiatt and Tamer Lundy Hiatt. Johnson says Tamer Lundy Hiatt died c1814 in Belmont Co, OH. Johnson lists a second wife for Jehu: Tamer Vernon Hiatt (c1780/1-1872, bur Chesterhill).

As of 17 Mar 2015, confusion re F.A.G. memorials for both parents:

Starting with the father, Jehu: Memorial 69136736 was created by Dave Jones in 2011, and it shows Jehu as having died in Morgan Co, OH, but buried in Frederick Co, VA, but it doesn't indicate any source for the Virginia burial and has no tombstone photo. Clearly, however, that is the first memorial created on F.A.G. for Jehu. There is a DUP memorial 87790293 created by Barbara Graves showing Jehu's correct burial at Chesterhill, which is listed in Hinshaw's Quaker records.

As for the mother, Tamer Lundy Hiatt, memorial 9517369 was created for her in 2004 by Robert "Rob" Weller and is now managed by Barbara Graves; it has no dates and no tombstone photo and says Tamer was buried at Chesterhill, but there is no reason to believe that somebody who died in Belmont Co would be buried in Morgan Co, where her husband didn't arrive until later. [Confusing matters further, Jehu's second wife was also named Tamer/Tamar and is buried at Chesterhill.] Nonetheless, memorial 9517369 is clearly the first created on F.A.G. for this person. In 2011, Dave Jones created a DUP memorial 69136801 for the same person and seems to have the correct date and place of death (1814 in Belmont Co, as Johnson says) but saying she was buried in Frederick Co, VA, but with no evidence of that and no tombstone photo.

Also as of 17 Mar 2015 I (Jay) have linked Jonathan to the earlier memorial for Jehu (even though I question the place of burial), and I have avoided linking Jonathan to either memorial for his mother, because of the F.A.G. prohibition against linking to "burials unknown." If we can find evidence in Quaker records of where she was buried in 1814 (probably in Belmont Co, OH), that would be most welcome.
