On November 18, 1938 as John L. Ryan Jr., he married Lucille Graham Wymond in Cook County, Illinois.

Lieut. General John L. Ryan Jr. was born at Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia near Chattanooga, Tennessee. His father was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1926. During his 27-year career he served three tours of duty at Fort Knox from 1937 to 1940, as Chief of Staff of the Armored Center from 1952 to 1954 and Commander of Fort Knox Armor Center from 1956 to 1959. He was a veteran of world War II and the Korean War. In 1963, he retired as commanding general of the 6th United States Army at Presidio, California near San Francisco. His awards included the Silver Star, Legion of Merit and the French Croix de Guerre for heroism in battle. He died at age 73 at 2:20PM at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in the District of Columbia. Arrangements were by Chambers Funeral Home in the District of Columbia.
