Winborn E. Davis, a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, LA, was born August 26, 1917, in Heflin, LA, and died Monday, May 29, 2006, at St. Tammany Hospital, Covington, LA.
Visitation at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., on Thursday, June 1, 2006, from 11 a.m. until funeral service at 2 p.m. Burial in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife, Claire C. Davis, Covington, LA; son, Mike Davis, Abita Springs, LA; grandsons, Brandon Davis, Covington, LA, and Aaron Davis, Abita Springs, LA; daughter-in-law, Nellie B. Davis; granddaughter, Kinsley Wicks, Bella Vista, AR; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Jakob Davis of Abita Springs, and Timothy, Jimmy and Johnny Wicks, all of Bella Vista, AR; brother, B.B. Davis of California; and sister, Vera Fuller of Minden, LA.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie M. Davis.
His accomplishments include serving as director of the Louisiana Department of Hospitals in Gov. Jimmy Davis' administration, 1963-1964; assistant director of Department of Hospitals, 1961-1962; first state director of the Louisiana Division of Mental Health, 1948-1951; administrator of LSU Student Hospital, 1965-1970; associate professor of management at LSU, 1965-1970; assistant to the dean for administration for the LSU School of Medicine, New Orleans, 1970-1973; director of staff development, Baton Rouge General Hospital, 1979-1982; and executive director of the Louisiana Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators, 1979-1992. Other notable accomplishments include serving as director of professional services in the Special Education Clinic at Southeastern Louisiana University, 1951- 1954; assistant professor of psychiatry, LSU School of Medicine, 1970-1973; and adjunct associate professor of health services administration, Tulane University, 1969-1980. He was the author of four books and numerous professional articles on health care management, mental health and social work, and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for services to the nursing home industry by the Louisiana Nursing Home Association, 2003.
He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II, 1943-1945, and in the Reserve until 1953. While in the service, he did research with the U.S. Typhus Commission in Egypt, epidemiology and antibiological warfare in the Mediterranean, and research in parasitology. He was a 1940 graduate of LSU and received a master's degree in social work from Tulane University in 1948.
