Joshua Roland was born in Jewett, Texas, but grew up in west Texas, and returned to Jewett for his senior year of high school. He married Willie Mae Williams on June 4, 1943. Roland worked as a mechanic before owning and operating Phelps Grocery store in Jewett for ten years with his family. He later raised hogs for a living and was well known for producing high-quality animals.
Roland and his wife shared a dream of visiting Alaska, and they were able to live that dream when he went to work constructing the Alaskan Pipeline. He worked on the Alaskan Pipeline from Valdez all the way to the North Slope.
He returned to Jewett and lived on Lake Limestone where he enjoyed raising a garden every year. He was a deacon and longtime member of Little Flock Baptist Church and volunteered for 15 years with the Master's Builders and traveled to many locations with their projects. Roland enjoyed visiting with people and sharing his numerous stories.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Mae Kennedy, in 2011.
Survivors include his daughters, Aloma Jean Kennedy, of Lake Limestone, and Barbara Lynn Hinson and her husband, Roger, of Arlington; grandchildren: Angela Hudson and her husband, Lowell, of Dripping Springs, Gary Hinson and his wife, Shannon, of Lone Oak, Troy Hinson and his wife, Kimberly, of Arlington, Jason Hinson and his wife, Angie, of Arlington, and Kim McCorkle and her husband, Brent, of Nashville, TN; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
