Jack C. Hale, 82, passed away after emergency heart surgery on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Queens Hospital in Honolulu, HI. He was a resident of East Wenatchee for 35 years. Jack was born on April 1, 1931, in Afton, WY to Everett and Mary Hale. He attended both grade school and high school in Afton and participated in many sports. He joined the Wyoming National Guard as a junior and excelled in Basketball, earning All-State during his senior year. He was Student Body President and graduated in May of 1949, from Star Valley High School. Jack attended the University of Wyoming on a basketball scholarship, until he injured his knee. In the summer of 1950, his Army service was activated during the Korean War and he served as a Sergeant First-class leader, training military personnel for tank operations on bases in Kentucky and California. After discharge in May of 1952, Jack worked on a survey crew for the Idaho Bureau of Reclamation. He enrolled at Utah State University in the fall of 1952, and married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Hemmert, a registered nurse, in December 1953. While attending college, he worked summers for J.A. Jones Construction Company on the Palisades Dam in Alpine, WY. He completed his Civil Engineering degree in May of 1956.
Jack continued to work for J.A. Jones throughout the northwestern United States. While working in Portland, OR, November 1957, his oldest daughter, Mindy, was born. His youngest daughter, Liz, was born in February 1963 in Placerville, CA. While living in Wenatchee, J.A. Jones Construction asked Jack to move the family to West Virginia. Rather than move, Jack went into partnership with Harry Long in 1970, and created Hale & Long Construction in East Wenatchee, WA. One of their first clients was Alcoa Aluminum. When Harry Long retired in 1971, Jack bought Harry's share of the business and kept the name, Hale & Long. Over the next 30 years, the successful commercial construction company was awarded many significant projects, including steel buildings, banks, schools and various heavy industrial developments throughout the greater Wenatchee Valley and surrounding counties. In 2000, Jack began selling his ownership interest in Hale & Long directly to the employees of the company.
Jack began his retirement by building a log home in Thayne, WY, where he enjoyed time with his family. Activities included fly fishing and working on the ranch. He had a love for animals, especially horses, which included the hobby of horse racing and cutter racing. Jack enjoyed winters in Arizona and summers in Wyoming while taking care of his wife, Peggy, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. After her passing in April of 2004, he continued living in both states and recently spent time in Oahu, HI with loved ones.
Jack is survived by his children: oldest daughter, Mindy Hale (Steve) Grady, granddaughter, Maggy of Scottsdale, AZ and grandson, Shawn of Orange County, CA; and youngest daughter, Liz Hale (Ben) Abo of Salt Lake City, UT
On Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Noon, a Memorial Service was held in Thayne, WY at Schwab Mortuary, followed by brunch at Dad's Steakhouse and Graveside Dedication at Thayne Cemetery. He will be greatly missed by his friends, colleagues and family. He will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity to others.
