REGARDING THE WIFE OF BASIL LEONARD BALLAR, SR:

Thelma Elizabeth Tabor was adopted by her Aunt and Uncle, Charles Stewart Bane and Eugenia Melissa "Genia" Tabor. Her Mom, Dora Elizabeth Harry Tabor, first wife of Berkley Kelly Tabor, had died soon after she gave birth to Thelma Elizabeth.

THELMA ELIZABETH BANE was born in Mudfork, Tazewell VA 12 Jan1925.
She married BASIL LEONARD BALLARD Sr in Abingdon, Washington Co VA, 24 June 1943. BASIL was born in Midway, Putnam Co WV 19 Sept 1925. He is the son of RADAR SIMPSOM BALLARD and OLLIE MAE COMPTON . Information regarding this family from Elizabeth Bane Ballard and a film made for their 50th Wedding Anniversary by their daughter Kathy Ballard in 1993.

FAMILY OF BASIL BALLARD:

Radar Simpson Ballard- father--Ollie May Compton-mother. Siblings: Elsie "Sis" Ballard , (then Basil), Louella Ballard and Clara Ballard.

Basil was 16 years of age and Elizabeth 15 (1940) when they met. Basil was driving a car on Jefferson Avenue in Bluefield, Tazewell Co., Va., with a male buddy when he first "spied" Elizabeth. His car didn't have any brakes and wouldn't listen to his heart so he had to make another circle to stop the car and talk to this lovely girl that had so "smitten" his senses.

They dated for three years before they were married.

Basil and Elizabeth eloped to Abingdon, VA., to marry. They had a family member from his family along with them for the wedding. Elizabeth wore a purple pleaded skirt with a pink garment for the top part of this outfit.

Basil took Elizabeth home and went back to Midway, WV., to find, in the mail, his draft notice to report in 48 hours for active duty in the U. S. Navy.

His parents drove to Bluefield, Tazewell Co, VA., and got Elizabeth , telling her parents that they would like for her to spend the last few hours with Basil before he left for training.
He then left for Illinois,-the Great Lake Naval Training Station. Elizabeth went home and told her parents she was married.
Basil would return home for two weeks after basic training before being shipped to the Pacific where he would spend the next three years of his life on the Islands of Apamama, The Gilberts and The Marshalls. During this time Elizabeth would travel to Baltimore, Maryland and work in the Western Electric Defense Plant.

THELMA ELIZABETH was adopted in Tazewell Co VA, 1925. Elizabeth is the biological child of Berkley Kelly Tabor and his first wife Dora Elizabeth Harry. Soon after the birth of Elizabeth her mother would die of pneumonia.

The sister of Berkley, Eugenia "Ginny" Melissa Tabor Bane and her husband, Charles Stewart "Sidney" Bane adopted Elizabeth. Her name was always known as Elizabeth Bane. Elizabeth was born in the big home at Mudfork, Tazewell Co VA. After the death of Dora, Berkely Tabor remarried Nonnie Wall and he moved his family to Abbs Valley, Tazewell Co VA.

Later Solomon P. Tabor Sr., would become the owner of this this home located where the pavement ends on the Falls Mills, to Mudfork, Tazewell Co VA., road. (I assume it still ends at this point-from here the road divides one division goes up over the hill to Boissevain, VA., and the other curves on down to the old Samual Henry Shrader homeplace and then to that of the old Hugh Edward Tabor farm.

Basil and Elizabeth now live in the homeplace of Sidney Bane and Eugenia "Ginny" Melissa Tabor. I spent a lot of time in this lovely home, and have may fond memories of the kindness of "Aunt Ginny". Ruth was always so sweet to me. I remember a family of Fleishman's that lived across the street. At this home was the only talking parrot I had ever seen, at that time in my life. It was also a little mean.

(This video was sent to Tucson, Az., for the 80th birthday of Hettie Marie Shrader Eagle by Henry Stuart Shrader in Florida. Hettie was 8o years of age in 1998).
