Inventor. He invented the first process for mass-producing steel inexpensively. This process, though no longer commercially used, at the time of its invention was of enormous industrial importance because it lowered the cost of production of steel. His attention was drawn to the problem of steel manufacture in the course of an attempt to improve the construction of guns for the Military. After two years of experiments he evolved the idea of his process, which is the decarbonization of cast iron by forcing a blast of air through the mass of metal when in molten condition. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1879 and was knighted the same year.
