William Adams Smith, Jr., age 84, died on June 3, 2014 at St. Joseph of the Pines in Southern Pines, NC after a long struggle with complications of dementia. He was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia on July 13, 1929. He was the only child of William Adams and Mary Callanan Smith. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1946, attended West Virginia University from 1946-47, and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1951. He earned an M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Lehigh University in 1957 and the Doctorate of Engineering Science in Industrial Engineering from New York University in 1966.

On active duty in the Navy during 1951-55, Bill Smith served two tours in the Korean War on board the Wisconsin (BB64), the Lake Champlain (CVA39), and the Waldron (DD699). He continued serving in the U.S. Naval Reserves until his retirement as a Captain in 1981. His lifelong love of the Navy was central to his life.

Professionally, Dr. Smith pioneered multi-disciplinary engineering computer and information systems applications at Lehigh University from 1957-1973 and was Director of the Lehigh Computing Laboratory for 10 years. At North Carolina State University from 1973 until his 1998 retirement, he championed interdisciplinary industry-academic cooperation. Dr. Smith was Head of the Industrial Engineering Department; Director, Productivity Research and Extension Program; Coordinator, Advanced Quality Programs Industrial Extension Service; and Professor Of Industrial Engineering.

His public service roles included proud co-founder, President, Chairman, and President Emeritus of the non-profit North Carolina Quality Leadership Foundation. He received four Order of Long Leaf Pine outstanding service awards from Governors of North Carolina from 1984-1994. He gave tirelessly of his time to numerous professional, technical, and academic organizations and had over a hundred joint industrial-academic applied research projects. He was a Member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, the Society of Cincinnati, and the Society of Colonial Wars.

He is survived by his five children from his first marriage to Patricia L. Smith of Parkersburg, W.VA: Julia Smith and spouse Donald Davis (Virginia Beach, VA), Caroline (C.J.) Smith and spouse John Meegan,(Lutherville, MD), Patricia A. Smith and spouse Jay Closser (Orange, MA), Sara Smith (Raleigh, NC), and William A. Smith, III and spouse Anne Harvey (Raleigh, NC). His second wife, Yvonne McCullough, predeceased him and he is survived by three of her children: Grant McCullough and spouse Bonnie (Raleigh, NC) ,Mark McCullough and spouse Amy (Foster City, CA), and Matthew McCullough and spouse Kerrie (Cary, NC). Her daughter Kim Peeler predeceased him. He is also survived by his much-loved fourteen grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Joseph of the Pines for their remarkable kindness and diligence in caring for their father.

A Catholic Mass in Dr. Smith's memory will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 12:00 noon at St. Andrews Catholic Church located at 3008 Old Raleigh Rd, Apex , NC. Following the services, there will be a reception from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM at the North Carolina State University Club, located at 4200 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC. Interment will be next to his parents in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Parkersburg, West Virginia, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the national Alzheimer's Association ( or to its Eastern North Carolina Chapter ( The Cremation Society of the Carolinas is in charge of arrangements.
