He was commissioned Major and Paymaster, United States Army, May 3, 1861; Brevet Lieutenant Colonel, March 13, 1865, for faithful and meritorious services during the war; Lieutenant Colonel December 31, 1879, and Colonel and acting Paymaster General, January 24, 1881. He retired from active service December 8, 1886.
