In 1854, the family moved to what was later to become Parker County, Texas. Here they became prosperous farmers, built a home, helped build a school, attended church and all seemed to be running smoothly. Two more children were born: Matilda 'Iddy' Hoggard born 1854 and Louisa Hoggard born 1858.
On May 9, 1861, Nancy Jane, age 17, married John Jeremiah 'Coho' Smith, who was born December 4, 1826 in Pennsylvania, son of James Smith and Elizabeth Stanford.
Nancy and Coho had seven children: Baylor Smith (1862-1894); James Potter Smith (1864-1947); Louisa Smith (1866-1916); Martha Lee Smith (1869-1955); Mary Ester Smith (1872-1945); Isabella Smith (1877-1970); Rosa Pearl (1879-1918); and Sarah Elizabeth Smith (1883-1973).
