Peggy Ann French passed away August 23, 2009, in Phoenix, Ariz. She was born in Alton, Ill., on March 29, 1931, to Elmer Horace VanMeter and Frances Nichols.

Peggy spent her early elementary school years in Cairo, Ill., and moved to Murphysboro, Ill., in 1946, where she entered her sophomore year in high school. At that time she met Bill French, her lifelong love. Peggy, a local beauty queen, became a registered nurse and worked at several different hospitals before and after she and Bill married in June of 1953.

She and Bill, an officer of the U.S. Marine Corps, spent three years in Quantico, Va., where their first two children, Shawn (Jodie) and Mary (Gary Rylander), were born at the Naval Hospital. Bill entered law school in St. Louis, Mo., in 1956. Their children, Kathy and Colleen (Bob Barlow) were born soon after. Peggy and Bill spent five years in the Washington, D.C., area before moving to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1965. Bridget (Dan Peacock) was born soon thereafter in 1966.

Peggy was active in many charitable organizations including the Ladies Goodwill Auxiliary, the Governor's Council for Developmental Disabilities, and a 25-year member of the AZ Foundation for the Handicapped. For many years she counseled parents of newborn children with Down's Syndrome of the many opportunities available to them.

Peggy will always be remembered for her love of her family, her fun-loving nature, and her sense of unbridled responsibility. Peggy is loved, remembered and survived by her husband of 56 years, five children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held from 6-7pm on Friday, August 28th at Brophy Chapel, 4701 North Central Ave. The Rosary will follow at 7pm. Funeral services will held at 11am on Saturday, August 29th at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Arrangements entrusted to A. L. Moore Grimshaw 602-249-2111.
