Social Reformer. A native of Saxony Germany she coupled her socialist beliefs with a deep desire to see women achieve equal rights. She became a leader of the German socialist movement and later one of the founders of the German Communist Party. She spent much of the 1880’s in voluntary exile from her homeland publishing and distributing literature promoting the rights of women. When the political climate changed, she returned to Germany where from 1891 to 1917 she edited the women’s newspaper, “Equality”. In 1907 she co-founded the International Socialist Women’s Congress and in 1911 organized the first “International Women’s Day”. She spent her latter years in Moscow working as an advocate for communism.
