Mr. William Joseph Allen, Jr. 85, of Jefferson, passed away at home, on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He was the wife of Margaret Umberger Allen, who he married on October 29, 1960.

Born October 2, 1928, in Lander, he was the son of the late William Allen Sr. and Naomi Toms Allen, he graduated from Middletown High School.

William was a life long dairy farmer who founded Glen-Toctin Farm in 1954 with his brother John. He had a strong interest for breeding Registered Holsteins and was a past president of the Maryland Holstein Assoc., the Frederick County Holstein Assoc. and served as a delegate to the National Holstein Convention. He was a director of Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative for over 20 years.

William was honored by the Jaycees as an Outstanding Young Farmer, by the Chamber of Commerce as part of the Frederick County Farm Family of the Year, by the Pennsylvania Farmer as a Master Farmer, by the Maryland Holstein Association as Outstanding Maryland Holstein Senior Breeder and in 2009 was inducted into the Maryland Dairy Shrine.

He served as president of the Valley Elementary School PTA, was a lector and usher at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and more recently a member of Holy Family Catholic Community.

Surviving besides his wife, are three sons, Michael Allen and wife Johanna, Bill Allen and his wife Sandy and Jim Allen and his wife Lisa, all of Jefferson; five grandchildren, Katelyn Allen, Todd Allen, Kristy Allen, Ryan Allen and Jill Allen; brothers, John Allen and David Allen, both of Jefferson; sisters, Ann Murphy of Ijamsville and Mary Margaret Sims of Locust Grove, VA; brother-in-laws, George Umberger and Frank Sims; sister-in-laws, Marie Allen, Mary Allen-Farmer, Ruth Adkins and Helen Knott; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by brother, Charles Allen.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8:30pm, on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Holy Family Catholic Community, 7321 Burkittsville Rd., Middletown, MD 21769. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30AM, on Monday, June 9, 2014, at Holy Family Catholic Community. Rev. Msgr. Rob Jaskot will officiate. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Todd Allen, Ryan Allen, Patrick Allen, Paul Allen, Philip Allen, Jerry Murphy, Jimmy Umberger and Danny Umberger.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Maryland Holstein Scholarship Fund, c/o Laurie Savage, 23301 Mt. Ephraim Rd., Dickerson, MD 20842.
