Sally Karen Bowman Hastings, beloved mother, sister, wife and daughter, went home to her Lord on September 3, 2011, at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY, at age 64 after bravely facing many years of illness. Sally was born June 25, 1947, in Ithaca, NY, the eldest daughter of Ronald and Frances Bowman's seven children. She attended Union Springs Central School and graduated from SUNY Brockport in 1969 with a teaching degree in Physical Education and Columbia Medical School in 1970 with a degree in Physical Therapy. She worked at New York Metropolitan Hospital in New York City from 1970 to 1974 and then at Gouverneur Hospital in Gouverneur, NY, where she met her husband James Hastings. Sally and James were married in 1978 and built their home with their children Sara and Mark on Ives St. Rd. in Watertown, NY. In 2003 Sally moved to Pine City, NY, to live with her daughter until her death. Sally was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis in 1976, yet she remained very active in her community and her faith. She played organ for Mass, weddings and funerals, and taught Bible School for St. Cecilia's Church in Adams, NY. She was active in the local food co-op and volunteered as a substitute teacher at Immaculate Heart Central High School in Watertown, NY. She found great joy in giving of herself to others and was known by all to be a welcoming, comforting friend in times of need. Sally is predeceased by her husband James Hastings and her parents Ronald and Frances Bowman. She is survived by her two children, Sara Hastings Van Gorden (Pine City) and Mark Hastings (Syracuse); her siblings: Shirley Baker of Port Byron, NY, Charles Bowman of Auburn, NY, Bruce Bowman of Hartland, MI, David Bowman of Auburn, NY, Mary Gardner of Wayne, PA, and Helen Veir of Richmond, TX. Sally's life will be celebrated and remembered with calling hours held at Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney Street, Corning, NY, on September 17, 2011, from 1-3 PM, and a funeral Mass at St. Cecilia's Church in Adams, NY, on September 24, 2011, at 11 AM officiated by Rev. Patrick Ratigan with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, Sally's family wishes to suggest donations in her name to Doctors Without Borders or your local food bank.
