Carlton was the son of Johnnie James Gilbert and Palmer Lee Clarington Gilbert. He was educated in the Houston County School System and was a graduate of Perry High School in Perry, Georgia. He was formerly employed with Bibb Manufacturing Company in Fort Valley, Georgia as a Machinist. He was a member of Mathis Chapel Baptist Church in Perry, Georgia.
He was married to Gloria Ann Cosby Gilbert on June 7, 1980.

2 Sisters: Ann Jackson and Joanne Wade(Herbert).
