Catherine was the daughter of John Smyth, a native of Ireland who settled in Hinds County Mississippi, prior to the Civil War. She married Alexander Speer in Hinds County on January 1, 1852. The couple had six children: James Augustus, William Grant, Mary Catherine, Catherine Emma, Anna Fredonia, and Edward A. Catherine's obituary was published in the April 6, 1905 edition of THE BRANDON NEWS (Brandon, Mississippi): "DIED - March 23, 6 o'clock a.m. Mrs. Catherine M. Speer, in the 77th year of her age. She had resided with her son James A. Speer for the past four years. She leaves four children, Jas. A. Speer, of Rankin, W.G. Speer, of Monroe, La., Mrs. C.E. Kersh, of Rankin and Mrs. P.R. McPherson, of Memphis. Her remains were interred in the Brandon Cemetery, Rev. Mr. Moore conducting the burial services."

Catherine does not have a marker in the cemetery, but is probably buried next to her husband, who died in 1870 and has a very large monument marking his grave.
