John H. Carnahan was born in Columbus, Kan. on Dec. 13, 1910, to Lulu & Robert Carnahan. He was 4th out of 6 children that grew up in the family.

In 1929, he came to CA in a Model T Ford. He worked various jobs in construction. During 1933-34, John performed in CC camps playing the guitar and tap dancing. Then he began in the grocery business working at Alpha Beta, Claremont. He married Edith Bell in Pomona in 1936. John & his father started their own grocery store called the Farmers Market in Pomona, first on Reservoir & then moving to Holt Ave. The Farmers Market was sold in 1962. He continued in the grocery business working in Pomona at the 5th Ave. Market, and in Claremont at Wolf's market until his retirement.

John was a charter member of the Uptown Lions Club for 25 years in Pomona serving as president for two terms. In 1976, he retired and moved to Bakersfield. He & Edith became involved in the Highland Knolls Golf Club for many years. John & Edith also participated in the mobile home association with John serving as editor of the monthly bulletin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond and Dale; one sister, Anna Fleming; and his wife Edith.

He is survived by two sisters, Emma Capron and Edith Fagg; one daughter, Donna Schwartz and her husband, Jeff; four grandchildren, Erin Doubek and her husband, Max, Ryan Forden, Jeremy Schwartz, and Brittany Schwartz; one great grandson, Nathan Doubek.

Funeral services will be held at Pomona Mausoleum, 502 E. Franklin Ave., today, Sept. 25 at 11 a. m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart Association. .
