Ben graduated from Stanford University in 1895 with an A.B. in Latin. He then received an A.M. in Classics from Harvard University in 1897 and a Ph.D. in 1899 also from Harvard. The title of his PhD dissertation was "De quartae declinationis apud priscos latinos usu" which translates to "About a quarter of the decline in the use of the old Latin." He was awarded a Parker Postdoctoral Fellowship to study at the American School of Classical Studies in Rome during 1899/1900. He was the head of the Classics Department at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and then joined the Classics Department at Stanford, where he remained for the remainder of his career, becoming the Head in 1935. He translated the 13 books of Livy which are available for download from the Archive.org

He married Anna Lee on June 3, 1902 in Washington, D.C.
