Eli Kennedy was born April 25, 1776 in Bedford County, Virginia to John Kennedy, Jr. and the daughter of a wealthy Dutchman named Peter Stilly.

On March 18, 1805, he married Patsy McConnell in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Patsy apparently passed away sometime before 1810, as the 1810 census shows the only female living with Eli was a female (daughter) under 10 years of age. On February 26, 1812, Eli remarried to Polly McClanahan in Bourbon County.

Eli was apparently quite well to do and well-known for his public service in Bourbon County, Kentucky. He died June 29, 1835 of cholera and his grave site and stone can still be seen near the old stone house he built and lived in after his marriage to Polly McClanahan.
