Martha "Jean" (Shepard) Bryan was born on August 7, 1928 in Wingo, Kentucky, the daughter of Douglas Harville Shepard (1886-1959) and Minnie Lou (Cooper) Shepard (1889–1928). Minnie died in Kentucky, but her place of burial has not been identified.

Jean was married 1st in 1950 to Shirley Warren Kindred (1929–2011), and she was married 2nd in 1979 to Waverly "Gene" Bryan (1932–2015), the son of Waverly K Bryan and Mary Alice (Underwood) Bryan.

She taught school in Centerville, Tennessee and retired from Kroger after 23 years. She also was a member of Hilldale United Methodist Church and was involved in the Loaves and Fishes program.

Jean was 85 years old and a resident of Clarksville when she passed away on June 3, 2014 at Sterling House.

Preceded in death by her parents, daughter Melanie Jo Ann Bryan, sister Annie Lou (Shepard) Thompson and by her brother John Briggs Shepard, she was survived by her husband, three sons, a daughter, eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery in Madison, Tennessee.
