NEWPORT NEWS - James N. "Step" Doggett, affectionately known as "Step" was born on July 24, 1936 and departed this life on May 30, 2014 after a long illness. Step was born in Halifax, North Carolina. He graduated from Huntington High School in 1956. Immediately following high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he faithfully served until 1959. He became an employee of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company upon his honorable discharge from military service. He worked at the Shipyard consistently from 1959 to 1995. He is survived by his two sons: Anthony Whitaker and Eugene Whitaker (Angela) and his sister, Mary Lou Tazewell. He also leaves to cherish his grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services for Mr. Doggett will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday June 6, 2014 at New Hope Baptist 1415 Big Bethel Rd. Dr. Christopher C. Carter Sr.,(Pastor) Min. Denise James, Officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Albert G. Horton Veterans Memorial Cemetery Suffolk, VA. Viewing will be held Thursday June 5, 2014 from noon until 6:00p.m. at C.C.Carter Funeral Home LLC. Arrangements by C.C. Carter Funeral Home.
