Susanah (more commonly known as Susan) Saunders was born on 19 July 1818 in Aylesford, Kings Co., N.S., the eldest child of Rev. Henry and Sarah (Randall) Saunders. Her father was an early Baptist minister in western Nova Scotia. Her grandfather, Timothy Saunders, came to Annapolis, Nova Scotia from Massachusetts in 1760 or shortly afterwards as part of the wave of settlers known as the New England Planters.

Susan married Edmund Harris, the eldest child of Christopher Prince Harris and Elizabeth (Spurr) Harris, on 23 December 1840 at Hillsburg Township, Digby Co., N.S.

They had 8 children, in the following order: Henry Christopher, Joseph E., Cynthia Ann, Elizabeth S., Charles Randall, George Davis, Maggie S. and Michael Spurr.

Religion: Baptist.

Following the death of her husband in 1889, she resided with her son Charles and his family in Morganville, Digby Co., N.S. It was there, at the home of Charles, that she died on 25 February 1903.
