First Lieutenant Nellis was the pilot of US Army Air Forces P-47C Thunderbolt #41-6295. After departing Mitchel Field on Long Island, the motor of his fighter plane caught fire, and he was ordered to point towards the sea and bail out. At 15:00 hours, the aircraft crashed along the shoreline, 2 miles east of Jones Beach, Long Island, New York.

Lt. Nellis descended into the sea and died of exposure. His body was recovered about an hour later.
