Mr. John Ramage Sr, Died in This City Yesterday
He Had Been in the Shoe Business Here For About Forty-five Years.
Another landmark la the financial and commercial advancement of Nashville was taken away in the death of Mr. John Ramage Sr. which occurred yesterday at the resident 424 Park Place. Ever since December Mr. Ramage has been confined to his room by an illness superinduced by a fracture of the hip sustained several years ago. This injury did not cease to trouble him, and for nearly two years he has been unable to attend to business. His death was quiet and painless although the suffering of late months had been great.

Born in Scotland, February 5, 1807, Mr. Ramage came to this country at the age of 16. His first home in the new world was Philadelphia, but he soon came South and settled in Florence, Alabama. After remaining In business there for several years, he went to Saltville, Virginia. Here he met and married Miss Mary Claiborne, daughter of Col Thomas Claiborne of this city.

In 1848, they removed to this city and Mr. Ramage soon afterward went into the retail shoe business. Excepting a suspension of his occupation during the war and for two years after it, he has remained in that business ever since, his commercial integrity and high honor winning for him success in an unusual degree. He was known outside of his business for a number of years as a director In the Commercial Insurance Company and the Nashville Railroad. Mr. John Ramage, Jr. is his only living child.
