Born in Grondzaw, West Prussia, Germany [A.K.A., Grazawy, part of present day Poland]. Augusta emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1885. Her son, Adolph Sutter, used to remark that she was "from Germany, near the Polish border." This was true at the time she lived there, but since the end of the First World War her village has been part of Poland. (It is much closer to Warsaw than to Berlin.) Daughter of Carl Auguste Pelke and Dorothea Zalewska. According to family tradition, she may also have gone by Wilhemina when she first came over [notes by her son, Adolph Sutter].

[Maiden name may also have been spelled Pæhlke.]
