Minister, Father Of The American Christmas Tree. Lutheran pastor who emigrated to America in 1850. Became pastor of Salem Lutheran Church, Neu-Bielefeld (now Black Jack), MO in September and joined the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod of October of that same year.. Took a call to Zion Lutheran Church, Cleveland, OH and was a pastor there from 1851 to 1881, serving as assistant pastor from 1881 to 1899. He served the LCMS as president of the Central District from 1860 to 1878 and then as president of the LCMS from 1878 to 1899. In 1890 he was commissioned by the LCMS to prepare a catechism, which was published by Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis, MO in 1896. It became known as the Schwan Catechism. He helped popularize the use of the Christmas tree in American churches.
