U.S. Congressman. Moving to New Jersey, in the 1850s, he taught school and was appointed New Jersey State inspector of public schools, in 1863. He went to Washington, D.C., in 1864, was a Washington newspaper correspondent and employed in the U.S. Treasury Department. He studied law, graduated from the Columbian University, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Washington, D.C. Relocating to South Carolina, in 1867, he became editor of the Charleston Courier, assisted in establishing the Charleston Republican in 1868 and was secretary to U.S. Senator William H. Buckingham, (1868-73). In 1874, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Robert B. Elliott, serving until 1875. An unsuccessful candidate for election, he moved to Colorado, in 1878 and edited a Denver newspaper. He was appointed supervisor of the census for Colorado in 1880, served as a United States post office inspector (1881-83) and engaged in the insurance business, (1883-90). He also practiced law until his death at age 72.
