Mary Ruth Underman Deetz, 83, of Columbus, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, May 29, 2014, after a battle with chronic Leukemia. The daughter of Eugene and Nina Weigel, she was born December 30, 1930, and raised in Upper Arlington, Ohio.

She attended Dennison University, a proud Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority member and graduate of The Ohio State University. Following graduation, she moved to Elyria to work as a "Betty Newton" for Columbia Gas and met and married Dr. Jack Underman of Columbus. Widowed in 1969, she courageously and unselfishly raised their five children; tragically, their first son, Jay Underman, died at the age of 25. Later in life, she happily married Lawrence "Bud" Deetz, who also preceded her in death in 2008. Mary Ruth will be fondly remembered as the Matriarch of her family and for her wisdom, strength and positive outlook to life's challenges. Music, art, literature and being a consummate learner were her prominent passions. A member of First Congregational United Church of Christ and an active Lorain County community volunteer of over 55 years, she moved to Columbus in 2010 to be closer to family. She was recently honored at the 75th Anniversary of the Ohio State Marching Band Script Ohio (originated by her father, Eugene Weigel).

She was prededed in death by her younger sister, Nina Bates.

A private family graveside service will be at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions/donations may be made to Goodwill Industries.
