Benjamin Franklin Collins was the son that moved this Collins line deeper south and further west. As his early family life was defined by a sense of honor, duty, and loyalty, so became entrenched in this young man a legacy that was ultimately passed on to his children. When his father Joseph Henry Collins, along with his eldest brother James Robert Collins, left to fight in the Civil War in 1863, Benjamin Franklin was only 7 years old. He was only 9 when his father died aboard the steamer Sultana on 27 Apr 1865. The family must have rallied close together on the homestead in Tennessee with an ardent sense of cohesiveness at the loss of their father. His mother was Sarah Sherrill who came from a prominent family from western North Carolina.

Benjamin Franklin Collins was born on 9 Jul 1856 in North Carolina – given the birthplaces of his siblings however, he may have either been born in North Carolina, Tennessee or en route to Tennessee. At this time the most cogent facts point to North Carolina. What we do know is that by 1860 Benjamin Franklin Collins was living in Bradley County, Tennessee.

On 22 Nov 1876 Benjamin Franklin Collins married Sarah Catherine Harper. Her mother and father were both Born in Tennessee and came from a fine, deep-rooted Tennessee family. The Collins' and Harpers must have been close as Benjamin Franklin's sister Louisa S. Collins married Sarah Catherine's brother William Row Harper, a ‘double-in-law marriage.' Benjamin Franklin Collins and Sarah Catherine Harper remained in adjacent Meigs and James County, Tennessee until the turn of the century. These concentric counties changed boundaries and names a few times between the years of 1869 – 1920 (cf. http://www.mapofus.org/tennessee/).

It is at this point that the Collins line becomes tangential. Sometime around 1907 Benjamin Franklin Collins, along with his wife and children, moved down to the great State of Texas as the family appears on the 1910 census in Rockwall, Texas which is just northeast of Dallas. As most of the children were of marriage age, some of them elected to remain in Tennessee, others to follow their father to Texas. For example, one of Benjamin Franklin Collins' children, John Pleasant Collins, remained in Tennessee while his twin brother, Joseph Henry Collins (my great grandfather), followed his father as a newlywed and possibly expectant father.

Eventually, three generations of Collins' moved out to California from Texas sometime around 1920: father Benjamin Franklin Collins, sons Joseph Henry and William Franklin Collins as well as all of the sons and daughters of these two boys.
