She attended Austin area schools, graduated from William B. Travis High School, obtained an Associate of Applied Science degree from Austin Community College in Word Processing/Administrative Secretarial in 1986, and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Phoenix Online in Human Services in 2009. She held various secretarial positions and was employed as a Legal Secretary and Docket Clerk at the Small, Craig & Werkenthin law firm for ten years and was a Legal Secretary III for the Office of the Attorney General for five years until her health failed.
Darlene accepted Christ at the age of five and united with the St. James Missionary Baptist Church in 1966, under the pastorate of the Late Rev. E.M. Franklin, and served as part of the St. James Music Ministry some 30+ years. Darlene united with the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in 2007 and was a faithful member of WOW(Women of Worship) until her health failed. She also loved children and worked tirelessly with the children of St. John Regular Baptist Church, her love for them kept her going even when her illness made it difficult.
Darlene had an early start in music, starting at the age of two, when she would get her mother's bible, sit in a dark corner and have church, imitating one of St. James Senior Choir's strongest sopranos, Sis. Vivian Brown. She also sang with her younger brother and sister as The Hicks Trio, under the encouragement and threats of her mother, and taught herself to play the piano at age eleven, having fond memories of her Uncle Marcell teaching her the "Boogie Woogie", which later strengthened her chord structure for traditional gospel music. She has played for various choirs and churches in Austin and surrounding areas, beginning with St. James Baptist Church Youth and Sanctuary choirs, Wesley United Methodist Intergenerational Choir, St. John Regular Baptist Church of Dale, Texas and Solid Rock Baptist Church of Austin. In all that she did, her goal was to live her life and carry herself in such a manner that those she came in contact with would see God's love through her. She strived to be a living example of God's healing power, goodness, and kindness.
She leaves to cherish her memory one sister: Bessie Mae Hicks Mayfield, two brothers: Clarence Hicks (Henrietta) and Richard Lee Hicks, one niece, one nephew, one grandniece, two grand nephews, one godchild: Sonja Alyse Washington, and a host of other relatives and friends.
