Esther (Whitaker) Hunter, 90, of Rutland, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at the Holden Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Her first husband of 48 years, Robert H. Hunter, died in 1989. Her second husband of 6 years, Erwin H. Moore, died in 2004. She leaves two daughters, Cynthia E. Hale and her husband Rollins of Boothbay Harbor, Maine and Deborah J. Hunt and her husband Clifton of Rutland; a son, Charles T. Hunter and his wife Deborah of Kernville, California; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, many nephews and nieces. A son, Robert W. Hunter and a brother, Josiah Whitaker, predeceased her.

She was born in Auburn, the daughter of Josiah H. and Mary E. (Hedges) Whitaker and lived in Auburn before moving to Rutland in 1970. Esther owned and operated the former Holiday Island Family Camping in Boothbay and the Seafarer Guest House in Boothbay Harbor. She also worked at Bancroft Oil Company and the Home Federal Savings Bank both in Worcester. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rutland and the Pakachoag Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in Auburn.

The funeral for Mrs. Hunter will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 20th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Auburn. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
