The Correctionville News, 30 December 1998, page 4: Betty Jane Brink, 78, Cherokee, Iowa, formerly of Correctionville, died Friday, December 25, 1998, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee after a long fight with cancer. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 29, 10:30 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Correctionville with Rev. Consorcia A. Sanchez and Pastor Larry Ostercamp officiating. Marion Johnson serviced as organist, Robin Bunch as pianist, Ruby Fulton as vocalist, and Rebecca Phipps, Greta Peterson and Rennae Smith as vocalists. Pallbearers were Raymond Walker, John Barker, John Brink, Jim Jaacks, Craig Struve and Bob Meskimen. Trish Tisthammer took care of flowers and Don Tisthammer arranged cars. Burial was in the Correctionville Cemetery under the direction of Barker Funeral Home. A prayer service was held on Monday evening at the Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville. Betty was born on November 23, 1920, to Rueben C. and Lena (Markuson) Ward, the youngest of six children. She grew to adulthood in Correctionville and graduated from high school in the class of 1938. She attended Iowa State College for one year and then returned to post-graduate high school for Normal Training and taught at a rural school for one year. She returned to Iowa State College and graduated in 1944 from the College of Home Economics with a major in Institution Management. She was employed by the Stouffer Corp. of Cleveland, Ohio, where she worked as a food supervisor and in the experimental kitchen pioneering in the perfection of Stouffer's frozen entrees. On May 19, 1945, she was united in marriage to Bob Brink, also of Correctionville, in Lakewood, Ohio. During their life together they lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and California before returning to Iowa in 1989 to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and a social member of the Cherokee Country Club. She liked cooking and homemaking, spending time with family and friends, golf, bridge and traveling. Survivors include her husband Bob; a daughter, Nancy and son-in-law Stephen Veit of Cherokee; two sons, Gary Brink of Los Gatos, California; and Robert and Cyndye Polsgrove of Murieta, California; four grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins; and one sister-in-law, Winona Ward of Silver Spring, Maryland. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Elmer, Mike and his wife Vi, Boyd and his wife Lulubel; two sisters and their husbands, Doris and Gaylen Anderson and Lois and Tim Meskimen. Memorials may be sent to the Hospice Program, Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital, Cherokee.
