James served as a Second Lieutenant & Navigator on B-17G #42-97520, 525th Bomber Squadron, 379th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Rockingham County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on September 3, 1941, prior to the war, in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Actor and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17G #42-97520, while on a bombing mission over Germany, was shot down by anti-aircraft flak and crashed in the woods near Schlebusch, Lippmanstraase, Germany during the war.

James was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
