Ned M. Richardson, 95, of Newberry died Thursday, May 29, 2014. Born May 1, 1919, he was the son of Henry B. and Bessie McGraw Richardson. Ned grew up in the Jolly Street area of Newberry County. He served in the US Army in WW II from 1942-1945 and fought in the European and African invasions. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries incurred in battle and was also awarded the bronze star. Ned lived his adult life in Whitmire and Greenville and returned to Newberry upon his retirement from JP Stevens Company after 40 years of service. Ned is survived by his wife of 73 years, Nellie Thomas Richardson; a daughter, Kay I. Richardson of Columbia; a granddaughter, Kristen Harbin of Valdosta, Georgia and a devoted friend, George Burk of Newberry. He was predeceased by a daughter, Neda Harbin, and three sisters, Janell Richardson, Mildred Rushton, and Mabel McCullough. Ned was a devoted Christian, family man, and friend to many. Memorial services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Friday, June 6, 2014 at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Karen Radcliffe. Entombment will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends before the service from 1:30 until 2:45 PM. It was Ned's wishes that memorials be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church restoration fund c/o First Community Bank, P.O. Box 417, Newberry, SC 29108 or to Epworth Early Intervention Center, P.O. Box 50466, Columbia, SC 29250.
