Archie A. Markley, 74, of 308 Lincoln Avenue NW, Carrollton, a retired mail carrier, died last Thursday in Valley Manor Nursing home at New Philadelphia after a six-week illness. Mr. Markley retired in 1958 after being a postal carrier for 41 years. He was appointed as Carrollton's first city carrier in 1917 and in 1929 was transferred to the rural service. Born in Lee Township, February 17, 1898, a son of the late John William and Mary (Sparks) Markley, he resided in Carroll County his entire life. He was graduated from Carrollton High School in 1917 and attended Harlem Springs College. Mr. Markley was a charter member of Minerva Bible Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, and as stated clerk of the Great Lakes bible Presbytery of the Bible Presbyterian Church. He was a real estate agent for Harvey Lash Agency and had been active in Carrollton Camp of Gideons since 1943. Other memberships included the Carroll County Postal Employees Association, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees of Mail Carriers and the Carroll County Historical Society. Mr. Markley's hobbies included beekeeping, photography and woodworking.
On June 9, 1921, he was married to Miss Grace Newell, who survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Miss Edna Markley of the home and Mrs. Owen (Jean) Vance of Canal Fulton; one brother, Dr. James Markley of Avon Lake; two sisters, Mrs. Lester (Clara) Hutton and Mrs. Bertha McDonald, both of Canton, and two grandchildren. A son, Dwight, preceded him in death in 1963. Two brothers, Tom and Charles Markley, are also deceased. Services were held Monday in the Sweeney Funeral Home at Carrollton with Rev. Albert W. Cook officiating. Burial was in Westview Cemetery here.
