Major League Baseball Player. For eight seasons (1938 to 1945), he was a pitcher with the New York Yankees. Born Richard Atley Donald, he attended Downsville High School in Louisiana, prior to playing collegiate baseball at Louisiana Technical University. After signing with the New York Yankees, he made his Major League debut on April 21, 1938. The following season (1939), he set a then record with 12 consecutive wins by a rookie. The feat stood nearly forty-years until Ron Guidry topped this record with 13 wins in 1978. He was a member of the 1941 Yankees team for which captured the World Series title. He pitched in one game during the 1941 World Series. In 153 career regular season games, he compiled a 65 win, 33 loss record, with a lifetime 352 ERA, in 932 innings pitched. After retiring as a player, he served as a longtime scout with the New York Yankees.
