Mrs. Sonya Mitchell Smith was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 9, 2014. She was born December 16, 1956 in Brunswick, GA to Paul Mitchell and the late Annie Mitchell.



She attended Glynn Academy, was formerly employed as a supervisor with Sundance Plaza Hotel, and was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Rural Hall, NC.



In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her brother, Kevin Mitchell; and two grandchildren, Verlie Fields, III and Darius Gainey.



She leaves to cherish her memories her devoted husband, Kennedy Smith of the home; daughter, Alicia Mitchell; two sons, Verlie J. Fields, II and Antione Mitchell; father, Paul Mitchell; her grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Jacora Gainey, Jake Gainey, IV, Jaki Gainey, Verlie J. Fields, IV, Nevaeh Fields, and Soniya Newsome; her great-grandchildren, Khylie Gainey, and Karley Cherry; mother-in-law, Ada Smith; beloved sisters, Sharon Mitchell, Sheila Mitchell, and Sophia Lumkins; brother, Andre James; a devoted aunt and uncle, James and Iris Mitchell; a longtime devoted friend, Joveata Thompson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.



Funeral services will be held at 12noon Thursday, April 17, 2014 at St. James United Methodist Church, 165 Bethania-Rural Hall Rd. Rural Hall, NC 27045. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11am until 12noon on Thursday at the Church
