Death by suicide after being found guilty of 1942 murder of Samuel Adams. Colt killed Adams with a hatchet in 1841 and concealed the body. His trial became a sensation in New York because of his family name, the manner of disposal of the corpse, and his arrogant demeanor in the courtroom. Stabbed himself in the heart on the morning of his hanging after he married Caroline Henshaw who later turned out to be the mother of his brother Samuel's son Samuel Caldwell Colt. When Samuel Colt died in 1862, he left Samuel Caldwell Colt the equivalent of 2 million dollars (2010 standards). Samuel's widow, Elizabeth Jarvis Colt, contested the gift, Caroline's son, Samuel Caldwell Colt produced a valid marriage license showing that Caroline and Samuel were married in Scotland during 1938 and that the document made him the rightful heir to part of Colt's estate, if not to the Colt Manufacturing Company.

American fur trader, bookkeeper, law clerk and teacher. Served briefly as U. S. Marine, forged letter to get himself discharged after 3 months. He became an authority concerning double-entry bookkeeping and published a textbook which had 45 editions and was published until 13 years after his death. In 1842 convicted of murder of a printer named Samuel Adams to whom he owned money for publishing his bookkeeping textbook.
Married the day of his execution 1842 Nov 18 his mistress by rector of St. Mark's Church, witnessed by his brother Samuel Colt.
Caroline Henshaw .Samuel Colt's first wife (married 1938). John's widow and her infant son, Samuel Caldwell Colt departed for Europe and took up residence in Bonn, Germany. Caroline eventually eloped with a Prussian officer of noble birth and was supported by regular payments from Sam Colt. Sam Colt consistently put quotation marks around the word "nephew" when referring to Caroline's son. This was Sam's way of acknowledging Samuel Caldwell as his son until it became public knowledge at Samuel Colt's death. Samuel Colt was able to keep his marriage to Caroline hidden. Samuel conspired with his
brother John to bigamously wed Caroline before his death.

Samuel Colt was an American inventor, industrialist and businessman who established Colt's Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company. Inducted into The National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006.

Elizabeth's father was a prominent Episcopal minister, her mother from an extremely prominent family that included several royal governors and military leaders as well as wealth from involvement in the West Indie's trade. With the passing of her husband, Samuel Colt, Elizabeth was the richest woman in the country. Elizabeth managed Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company successfully for 43 years. Elizabeth was a prominent philanthropist and patron of the arts. She sold the Colt's Fire Arms company in 1901. When she died in 1905 her home was converted into a home for widows of Episcopalian ministers . Her property (140 acres) become Colt Park. Elizabeth used her wealth to play leading roles in countless Connecticut religious, social, art and charitable organizations. She was known affectionately as "The First Lady of Hartford". Her personal art collection of over 600 American & European objets s'art were bequeathed to the Wadsworth Atheneum.

Caldwell attended Yale University and was known later in life for being a yachtsman. Caldwell also was a gunmaker, he designed a barrel riffle that became one of the rarest Colt firearms ever made. Caldwell drowned at sea at age 35 near Punta Gorda, Florida while piloting his yacht "The Dauntless". His mother Elizabeth, had a parish house built near the family'e estate, Armsmear, in his name. The Parish house is listed in the National Register of Historical Places. When her son Caldwell Hart Colt died in 1894. Elizabeth had Sam and their four young children disinterred from their private burial site at their Armsmear estate and had them reinterred at Cedar Hill Cemetery in their large lot on Section 2.

Samuel Colt married 1938 Caroline Henshaw. Her son, Samuel Caldwell Colt was later identified as his son when Samuel's death occurred in 1862. The marriage and child were kept from the world, including his second wife Elizabeth Jarvis Colt. Samuel was born Dec 1841 and died 1915 Jul 15 (aged 73) in Farmington, CT. He is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford, CT FAG 152549364. He married Mary Malvina Goodwin 1847-1939 m 1863. Their children were:
