Herbert Lionel Keller, 79, passed away unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at his home in Bates City, MO. Herbert was born on May 4, 1925, in Urbana, MO, to Edward Lawrence Keller and Sylvia Gussie (Baldwin) Keller.
He was a graduate of the Skyline High School in Urbana.
He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Lucille Kirk, on Sept. 13, 1944.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II, and was honorably discharged.
The couple settled in Bates City in 1950, where they remained until death.
He retired from the Ford Motor Co. after working more than 30 years in the paint department, and was a proud member of the UAW Local 249.
Both Herbert and Mary loved to sing and play music.
He served many terms as mayor of Bates City and his CB friends will remember him as "Cockroach" from the Black Flag base.
Herbert made a personal profession of faith in Jesus Christ as a young man and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bates City.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his parents, and one sister, Irene Mason.
He is survived by two daughters, Donna Lea Webb and Dewanna Lynn Lewis, both of Bates City, MO; one son, Donny Gale Kirk of Odessa, MO; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by one sister, Joanne Grannemann of Higginsville, MO.
He was a man of integrity and will be remembered for his quick sense of humor and his loving ways. Our loss is unspeakable but his loving spirit will remain with us.
