Sgt. 1st Class Shawn Dostie, 32, was patrolling a main supply route near Baghdad when he was fatally wounded by a roadside bomb, the Pentagon announced Tuesday.
Dostie enlisted in the Army's 502nd Infantry Regiment knowing that the assignment would place him in peril, his father, Robert Fugere of Rumford, ME, said Wednesday.
"No matter what he did, he'd be on the front lines," Fugere said.
Fugere and Dostie's mother, Delanie Fugere, went to Fort Campbell to be with Dostie's wife, Stephanie, and two children immediately after they were notified of their son's death.
Dostie also is survived by a sister, Crystal Desrosiers of Lewiston, ME.
Dostie was known to friends and relatives as a quiet boy and a hard worker. "He always wanted to make his way, always self-sufficient. He wanted to make people proud of him," his father said.
A memorial service at Fort Campbell, KY is scheduled for Saturday, followed by a second funeral service later in Maine.
