US Senator, Civil War Nebraska Territorial Governor. Served as the Governor of Nebraska Territory from 1861 to 1867, in which capacity he was a staunch Union supporter, and facilitated the raising of hundreds of Union troops from Nebraska. Elected as a Senator from Nebraska to the United States Senate, serving as a Republican from 1877 to 1883. He was the grandfather of William Henry Harrison, who served as a three-term Congressman from Wyoming in the 1950s and 60s.
